Head of Computer Vision

Our AI powered software platform, Lumi, automates operational data capture, insights and processes in labs, augmenting scientists so they can focus on the more creative aspects of their work. Lumi is versatile and is being applied across a wide range of life science industries, including in biotech and pharma.

We are a startup where the early team have a strong background in various frontier technologies and a deep love for making science better. We’ve already shipped a first version of the Lumi platform and we’ve received excellent feedback from early customers. We have very ambitious plans for Lumi ahead, so now we’re looking for a Head of Computer Vision to head up our strategy, research and internal team.

Your impact

    • As the Head of Computer Vision, your expertise will play an instrumental role in developing and leading the strategy on all things Computer Vision at Reach Industries. You will be responsible for an effective execution of the strategy agreed with the CTO and progression of projects through different stages (feasibility, discovery, development, and deployment). You will ensure that teams are adhering to established engineering standards, coding practices, and way of working. This role will also require mentorship of the two current CV Developers and creating an environment for their growth and development. You will also be expected to define your own research agenda and collaborate with the CTO to drive forward a cohesive program of basic, fundamental, and applied research.. 
    • Partner closely with the CTO and CV Engineers to develop carefully engineered computer vision projects using modern machine learning methods 
    • Continue to actively engage in CV and AI  research with and through the broader research community. 
    • Lead and add ideas and provide creative input to computer vision projects 
    • Adhere to Reach Industries standards and ways of working

Your experience

    • Strong proficiency in Python/C++ for AI model development and inference.
    • Experience with OpenVINO, OpenCV, AWS, CVAT, scikit-learn, and scipy for visual AI applications
    • Strong experience with AI modelling.
    • PhD or MA in computer vision, computer science, electrical engineering, statistics, applied mathematics, or a related field or equivalent industry experience. 
    • At least 6-8+ years of experience in developing machine learning models 
    • CV Ops experience: model tracking, model governance, multiple models in different production contexts 
    • Experience leading collaborative ML/data science projects and teams from scratch
    • A track record of leadership in research and capability in expanding the frontier of addressable problems. 
    • Track record of collaborating successfully with CV engineering teams to deliver complex AI and ML learning models. 
    • Nice to have: Proficiency in TensorFlow/Keras, PyTorch, and PaddlePaddle for model training and optimisation.

Important Note on Working Model and Eligibility

Our "remote-first hybrid" approach emphasizes the flexibility and autonomy of remote work, allowing our team to maintain a healthy work-life balance. However, the collaborative nature of our projects occasionally necessitates in-person interactions, especially for tasks that benefit from face-to-face communication or aren't as effective over virtual platforms. As such, while a significant portion of your work will be remote, expect to be present at our Bristol office around once a week or more frequently during key project phases. Additionally, due to the logistical and legal considerations of our hiring process, all applicants must possess the unequivocal legal right to work in the UK without the need for visa sponsorship.
