Machine Learning Intern/Co-op (Fall 2023)
Cohere
Toronto, Palo Alto, San Francisco, London
Who are we?
We’re a small, diverse team working at the cutting edge of machine learning. At Cohere, our mission is to build machines that understand the world and to make them safely accessible to all. Language is at the crux of this, but it can be difficult and expensive to parse the syntax, semantics, and context that all work together to give words meaning. The Cohere platform provides access to Large Language Models through its APIs that read billions of web pages and learns to understand the meaning, sentiment, and intent of the words we use in a richness never seen before.

We've raised our Series B, signed a multi-year partnership with Google Cloud, and we are focused on bringing our technology to market. We will partner with customers so they can build natural language understanding and generation into their products with just a few lines of code.

We’re ambitious — we believe our technology will fundamentally transform how industries interact with natural language. And we have the technical chops to back it up - Cohere’s CEO, Aidan Gomez, is a co-author of the groundbreaking paper “Attention is all you need”, and was previously part of Google Brain. Our entire technical team is world-class.

We are focused on creating a diverse and inclusive work environment so that all of our team members can thrive. We welcome kind and brilliant people to our team, from wherever they come.

Why this role?
Ship state of the art models to production.
Design and implement novel research ideas.
Build elegant training/deployment pipelines.

We have offices in Toronto, Palo Alto, and London but embrace being remote-first! There are no restrictions on where you can be located for this role.

As a Machine Learning Intern, you will:

    • Design, train and improve upon cutting-edge models
    • Help us develop new techniques to train and serve models safer, better, and faster

You may be a good fit if you have:

    • Proficiency in Python and related ML frameworks such as Tensorflow, TF-Serving, JAX, and XLA/MLIR
    • Experience using large-scale distributed training strategies
    • Familiarity with autoregressive sequence models, such as Transformers
    • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
    • A demonstrated passion for applied NLP models and products
    • Bonus: experience writing kernels for GPUs using CUDA
    • Bonus: experience training on TPUs
    • Bonus: papers at top-tier venues (such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AIStats, MLSys, JMLR, AAAI, Nature, COLING, ACL, EMNLP)

Cohere For AI is the dedicated research arm of Cohere. The Cohere For AI research lab seeks to solve complex machine learning problems by supporting fundamental research that explores the unknown. We are focused on creating more points of entry into machine learning research because we believe technology is powerful, and empowering different perspectives ensures responsible innovation.

The Cohere For AI Scholars Program is an 8-month, full-time research apprenticeship. The Scholars Program runs from January 8, 2024 - August 23, 2024. This program pairs aspiring machine learning researchers with world class NLP research experts and an outstanding engineering team to collaborate on innovative machine learning research projects. The majority of our scholar projects this year focus on NLP problems at scale, ranging from questions about efficiency, generalization, responsible AI and data quality. Scholars will have the support of an experienced research team and access to cutting-edge AI technology as they contribute to projects at the forefront of machine learning research.

We encourage applications from a wide range of backgrounds, regardless of previous academic experience. Different from last year during our inaugural scholar cohort, we will accept scholars who have previously published. We received meaningful feedback that this was an imperfect measure, and excluded aspiring researchers who face great obstacles in entering the field of machine learning. However, we remind applicants that our goal is to be the first door to open for someone starting out. If you already have considerable research experience, this program is not suitable for you.

For more information on the Cohere For AI Scholars Program, please click here.

All applications for the Scholar Program must be submitted by September 11, 2023.

As a Research Scholar, you will:

    • Collaborate with the Cohere engineering team on machine learning and natural language processing research projects, with the goal of releasing published papers or open source code.
    • Contribute to the advancement of meaningful scholarship in the machine learning and natural language processing space

Who are we?
We’re a team of engineers, thinkers, and champions whose aim is to give technology language. Every day our team is breaking new ground, as we build transformational AI technology and products for enterprise and developers that wish to harness the power of Large Language Models.

We're driven by ambition, as we firmly believe that our technology has the potential to revolutionise the way industries engage with natural language. Our strong technical foundation speaks for itself, with our team composed of world-class experts who have collectively accumulated hundreds of thousands of citations in academia.

The Cohere team is a collective of college dropouts, PhDs, alumni of big tech and scrappy start-ups, new grads and career pivots, who believe a diverse team is the key to a safer, more responsible technology. At Cohere, work isn’t the opposite of play, as we build the future of language AI with team members on almost every continent in the world, working from high rises, cabins, tour buses, and dog-friendly offices.

There’s no better time to herald the next step with us as we shape the future of Generative AI.

About the Team
The Cohere Embeddings team is at the forefront of harnessing the power of text representations, also known as text embeddings. When you hear about large language models (LLM), probably the first thing that comes to mind is the text generation capability, such as writing an essay or creating a marketing copy. But another thing you can get is text representation: a set of numbers that represent what the text means, and somehow capture the semantics of the text. These numbers are called text embeddings.

The Embeddings team is on a mission to redefine how we understand and utilise text representations. We're focused on building the most robust foundation models for search, with a strong emphasis on enabling search across incredibly intricate documents and diverse data types.

About the Role
As a Web Developer within Cohere's Embeddings team, you'll be at the forefront of transforming the way we search and extract meaning from text. Your role is instrumental in advancing our mission to leverage text embeddings for complex data types and documents. If you're a full-stack web developer with expertise in Database design, Front-end development (using technologies like JavaScript, React, or Angular), and Back-end development (utilizing tools like Node.js, Next.js, PHP, or FastAPI), we want to hear from you.

In this role, you will:
- Collaborate with the Embeddings team to design and implement robust database solutions that underpin our text representation models.
- Develop cutting-edge front-end applications using technologies like JavaScript, React, or Angular, ensuring an exceptional user experience.
- Build powerful back-end systems with tools such as Node.js, Next.js, PHP, or FastAPI to support our search capabilities on complex data.
- Have fun and build long lasting friendships!

Qualifications
To excel in this role, we seek candidates with the following qualifications:
- Proven experience in database design and management.
- Expertise in front-end development, including proficiency with JavaScript, React and Angular.
- Strong back-end development skills, with experience in Node.js, Next.js, PHP, or FastAPI.
- A passion for innovation and a deep curiosity about text embeddings and their applications.
- Effective problem-solving abilities.
- A collaborative mindset, ready to work closely with a dynamic team at the forefront of text representation technologies.

Join us in redefining how text embeddings empower search and understanding. Be part of a team that's shaping the future of text representation and complex data retrieval.
If some of the above doesn’t line up perfectly with your experience, we still encourage you to apply! If you consider yourself a thoughtful worker, a lifelong learner, and a kind and playful team member, Cohere is the place for you.

We value and celebrate diversity and strive to create an inclusive work environment for all. We welcome applicants of all kinds and are committed to providing an equal opportunity process.

Why this role?
At Cohere, we strive to continually improve our large language models. Academic research and real-world experience has demonstrated that high quality, diverse datasets can contribute as much to the performance and capabilities of LLMs as the underlying model architecture and training regimen. We at Cohere believe data will play a central role in accelerating the advancement of our already world-class language models.

Data is therefore critical to our success. Our ability to acquire data that is accurate, relevant, and timely is key to our ability to improve the quality of our models. We strive to continuously improve our data acquisition processes and systems to ensure that we have the data we need to stay competitive and meet the needs of our customers. We run frequent experiments to learn more about the role of data for model quality, from data mixtures, to cleaning techniques, to quality control.

This role will be part of the Data Acquisition team, which broadly provides data for training models and is responsible for building and maintaining the infrastructure that acquires, cleans, and formats data for model training. We are looking for a technically skilled, resourceful problem-solver who is able to work in areas of ambiguity and find efficient and sometimes creative solutions. The main responsibility of this role is to improve our internal data acquisition infrastructure, which includes data crawlers, formatters, and integrations with data providers. This role would also work closely with different teams at Cohere to support their data acquisition needs, as well as engage in more experimental work to develop highly informative data signals.

Please Note: We have offices in Toronto, Palo Alto, and London but embrace being remote-first! There are no restrictions on where you can be located for this role.

As a Member of Technical Staff, Data Acquisition, you will:

    • Develop data pipelines to acquire, prepare, and integrate high-quality datasets into model training and evaluation
    • Collaborate with research and product teams to identify, prioritize, and secure new data sources
    • Enhance and develop infrastructure for data management, pipeline orchestration, and MLOps, while avoiding premature optimization
    • Run experiments using new data inputs, preprocessing techniques, and data mixtures

You may be a good fit if:

    • You have more than 2 years of experience working on a software or machine learning engineering team
    • You have proficiency in Python and have used distributed processing technologies like Spark, Dask, etc.
    • You have experience building data pipelines and ETL processes for large-scale datasets
    • You have experience working with unstructured and/or human-annotated data (e.g., collecting or assessing sample quality).
    • You have experience with ML frameworks such as Tensorflow, TF-Serving, JAX, and XLA/MLIR
    • You have strong communication and problem-solving skills, preferring the right tool for the job even if it’s outside your wheelhouse
    • You feel comfortable actively reading academic literature and researching state-of-the-art NLP best practices.
    • You have a demonstrated passion for applied NLP models and products
If some of the above doesn’t line up perfectly with your experience, we still encourage you to apply! If you consider yourself a thoughtful worker, a lifelong learner, and a kind and playful team member, Cohere is the place for you.

We value and celebrate diversity and strive to create an inclusive work environment for all. We welcome applicants of all kinds and are committed to providing an equal opportunity process. At Cohere, work isn’t the opposite of play, as we build the future of language AI with team members on almost every continent in the world, working from high rises, cabins, tour buses, and dog-friendly offices.

There’s no better time to herald the next step with us as we shape the future of Generative AI.

Why this role?
We’re looking for an Engineering Program Manager to join Cohere’s Tech organization. We need someone who will bring curiosity, drive, independence, and leadership to the company. You should have hands-on experience managing projects for consumer software development and machine learning solutions, and building large-scale foundational processes and programs to improve engineering operations.

In return, you will have the unique opportunity and responsibility to design the way that Cohere will operate for years. You’ll get to build relationships with some of the leading AI and NLP minds in the world, collaborate with other Cohere teams like Product, Business, and Marketing, have significant visibility and impact on a fast-growing product, and contribute to the company culture.

This role will start as an individual contributor, but with a rapidly growing product and staff, there will be ample opportunities for both leadership and career growth.

Please Note: We have offices in Toronto, Palo Alto, and London but embrace being remote-first! There are no restrictions on where you can be located for this role.

As an Engineering Program Manager, you will:

    • Communicate: Provide clear, timely and objective communication across the tech organization, between Cohere teams, to company leadership, and with external partners & customers. Be the voice of expertise when it comes to operational excellence.
    • Optimize: Coordinate ideation-to-action and break down complex issues into strategies to drive engineering alignment with product, business, and marketing, maintaining teamwork and collaboration.
    • Plan: Create and manage project schedules with clear dependencies, critical path and systematic methodology. Manage risks and mitigations, and re-plan as events warrant. Drive alignment across the organization and between teams.
    • Execute: Drive on-time delivery and deployment, identifying development and feasibility needs, and establishing achievements for checkpoints and status updates.
    • Problem solve: Proactively identify issues and solutions, and marshal resources necessary to attack and resolve blockers. Coordinate with teams to identify, track, and prioritize impacts to schedule and product quality, including cross-functional dependencies.

You may be a good fit if you have:

    • Have at least three years working as an Engineering or Technical Program or Project Manager on a product that required NLP model training or optimization for a consumer product.
    • Have owned the delivery of multiple consumer-facing software products requiring large organizations (50+) to execute to a delivery schedule (experience leading and supporting new “0-to-1” initiatives is a plus); startup experience is great, but you should have also spent multiple development cycles on an established product.
    • Can give multiple examples demonstrating the project management skills to structure, track and handle several simultaneous fast-paced work streams across cross-functional (engineering, product, business, etc) teams.
    • Have designed and rolled out organization or company-level operational programs or processes that measurably improved the customer or employee experience.
    • Use data and metrics to extract insights, back up or challenge assumptions, make recommendations, prioritize features, and drive actions.
    • Are an expert at communicating concisely and effectively in a variety of ways, and can instill confidence and trust with key partners (e.g. business, product, marketing, designers, OS engineers, ML researchers) with your initiative.
    • Are considered self-motivated, resilient, and inspiring with a bias for action; demonstrate creative and critical thinking capabilities; and can quickly (real-time) triage, prioritize, and lead under pressure.
    • Have studied Cohere and the NLP product space before you apply and are excited about the application of machine learning to solve language-specific consumer challenges (experience with NLP is a huge plus).

We've recently raised our Series C, and we are focused on bringing our technology to market.
